The Myth of “More Work = More Growth”
As small business owners, many of us believe the solution to slow growth is to work harder, push longer, or take on more. But here’s the truth: more effort doesn’t always equal more results.
The Pareto Principle — better known as the 80/20 Rule — proves it. In business, 80% of your results typically come from just 20% of your efforts. The other 80% of what we do? It’s noise.
Finding Your “Vital 20%”
Think about it:
80% of your revenue likely comes from 20% of your customers.
80% of your sales success probably comes from 20% of your marketing.
80% of your headaches often come from 20% of your clients or systems.
The key to growth isn’t spreading yourself thinner. It’s about identifying the vital 20% that moves the needle — and doubling down on it.
Accelerators: Multiplying the Right Effort
This is where accelerators come in. An accelerator is anything that multiplies the effect of your best efforts — a system, a tool, a partnership, a framework.
Examples:
Automating repetitive admin so you can focus on client work.
Standardizing onboarding so every new hire is effective faster.
Creating a referral process that makes word-of-mouth scale naturally.
Alone, each action might seem small. But combined, accelerators multiply your results while protecting your energy.
Where AI Fits: Automating the “80%”
One of the most powerful accelerators available today is AI. Not as a gimmick, but as a tool to clear the noise and let you focus on your most valuable 20%.
Practical examples:
Client follow-ups: Automated drafts for recap emails, ready for you to personalize in seconds.
Scheduling & reminders: AI tools that handle coordination, saving hours of back-and-forth.
Content assistance: Generating first drafts so you can refine instead of start from scratch.
These aren’t replacements for you — they’re multipliers. They eliminate the 80% busywork so you can amplify your 20% genius.
Reflection Questions
This week, take 5 minutes and ask yourself:
What’s really in my vital 20%?
How much time am I wasting in the 80% noise?
What accelerators (systems, people, or AI) could multiply my best efforts?
Ready to Scale Smarter?
On October 6, I’ll be sharing how small businesses can use frameworks like 80/20 — plus real-world AI workflows — to achieve exponential results at the RVA Small Business EDU Forum.
